Why this was our weekly pick

The An-124 match brings together outsized cargo transport and less visible engineering, including its use of composite materials.

Built around oversized cargo

Aircraft type background

The An-124 Ruslan was designed as a very large cargo transport. NASA’s historical account says it first flew on December 26, 1982, and could carry more than 165 tons of cargo. Its scale is worth noticing alongside its conventional swept-wing transport layout: the aircraft paired a familiar overall configuration with a cargo capacity that placed it among the heaviest transports of its era. Materials and systems

Aircraft type background

A NASA composites history reports that the An-124 airframe used about 12,000 pounds of carbon-, aramid- and glass-fiber-reinforced plastics. That detail offers a less obvious way to read the aircraft: its size depended on structural materials as well as powerful engines. A NASA aeronautical engineering review, published in 1991, described four three-spool Lotarev D-18T turbofans and four hydraulic systems for the flight controls. These are specific design details worth keeping in view when observing the type, alongside its outsized cargo role. [2] [3]

What remains uncertain

  • The aircraft type comes from a database match. These sources describe the type; they do not independently identify this airframe or establish its mission, occupants or reason for flying.
  • Research was gathered after the observation. Historical aircraft metadata may have changed; the recorded reports remain separate from the background above.
